DIY means do it yourself. In case you do not know what that means, things that you can do by yourself with materials and equipment around you. It is possible to make liquid soap at home with materials and ingredients from stores.

I will teach you the step-by-step procedure by which you can make liquid soap at home. Follow the procedures and you will get the perfect liquid wash for your dishes.

Safety Precautions

There are safety precautions that you need to follow to avoid injuries or bad output. I will discuss them here in this section.

Wear Protective Clothing

You need to adhere to this rule very well because you are dealing with dangerous chemicals and as such, they can cause injury to your skin if you are not careful. Ensure that the material of protective clothing is a hard one and not easily penetrated. A jacket, Apron, or any other form of clothing is preferable.

Wear Gloves

Wear rubber gloves during mixing the chemicals, especially caustic soda. Ensure the rubber gloves fit your hand properly and cover both hands.

Wear Protective Mask

A protective mask is also essential for your protection during the whole procedure. It will protect you from inhaling dangerous and contaminated air from mixing the chemicals.

Wear Safety Goggles

Safety goggles will help protect your eyes from splashes from the mixing of chemicals.

Wear Rubber boots

You need to protect your feet as well. You can do that by wearing rubber boots or any shoe that can protect you from the splashes of chemicals.

Apart from the aforementioned safety materials that you need for the procedure. You need to follow this set of rules

Do not carry out the whole procedure where you have children. You need to make sure they are in not near any of the ingredients
Wash your hands thoroughly after you finish the procedure
When dealing with caustic soda, pour it gently into the water to avoid splashes. That is the correct way else there is going to be a problem.
Ensure all the materials used for the whole procedure are kept in a separate and secure place, in essence, they should not be used for anything else.
During the procedure, make sure you have a ready supply of water. You can either choose to be close to the water supply or have enough ready for the whole procedure.

What you need for the procedure

The materials you need for the procedure include the following:

Measuring Jug
A Big Bowl
Buckets (of different sizes). Three should be okay except if you want to make large-scale production.
Spatula (plastic or steel).

For the chemicals, you need:

Nitrosol
Caustic Soda
Soda Ash
Texapon, Genapol, or Acopol
Sodium Benzoate
Synthetic Fragrance
Colorant
Formalin
Sulphonic Acid

Texapon is responsible for the cleansing action of the soap. You can either replace it with genapol or acopol and there is no difference in the action.

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate helps with giving the soap the right foaming action.

The sodium benzoate is the stabilizer for the mixture.

The colourant is the color that you wish your soap to take. There are different colours and the choice depends on you. We have green, blue, white, and pink to be the commonly used colours.

Scented Fragrance/Perfume

A scented fragrance or perfume is needed to give the soap a pleasing aromatic smell. You can choose any perfume or fragrance of your choice.

Formalin helps preserve the soap for a long time. This material is very important for the whole production as, without it, the soap loses its potency.

Sulphonic acid is one of the ingredients that give the soap, the foaming action.

Procedure To Make Liquid Soap

Take a big bowl, this will be the production bowl, that is, the center for the mixture of the ingredients. Ensure all ingredients are available at the place of production.
Fill the big bowl with about 5 liters of water. Add your nitrosol to the water and stir thoroughly to get a homogeneous mixture.
Get another small bowl or bucket. Add 2 liters of water to it. Add your caustic soda to that water and stir gently and thoroughly to get a thoroughly mixed mixture. Do this simultaneously as you are mixing the nitrosol in the big bowl.
Transfer the homogenous mixture of the caustic soda and water into the big bowl. Stir the mixture continuously with your spatula.
Also, make a mixture containing soda ash and water. Pour your soda ash into 2 liters of water in a separate bowl. Stir continuously to get a homogenous mixture. Transfer the mixture into the mixture of nitrosol and caustic soda to the big bowl.
Stir the mixture in the big bowl continuously and thoroughly ensure the whole components mix well. The mixture begins to become thick.
One important thing to note is that the first three components used for making liquid soap should be in this order – first the nitrosol, caustic soda, and soda ash. Keep this in mind.
With that being said, you can now add your texapon, sulphonic acid, foam booster, formalin, sodium benzoate, and scented fragrance in any order. Continue to stir as you add each of these ingredients one after the other.
Ensure you mix the whole mixture thoroughly and gently to make sure that all the ingredients are evenly mixed. Then, cover the production bowl such that it is airtight. You can leave this for 5 hours or more.
Afterward, you can fill in small bottles and kegs as many as the liquid soap can contain.
