Egg Rolls

When you google egg rolls, you will come across Chinese egg rolls. With this discovery, you must be thinking, are egg rolls a Nigeria thing? Let me come in there, egg rolls indeed originated from Asia and are not entirely a Nigeria Snack. It is a common snack among Asia countries such as Vietnam and China.

However, despite the egg rolls not being from Nigeria roots, we have our kind of egg rolls entirely different from the originator’s own. Nigeria egg roll is similar to buns with the only difference being that we have egg rolled into the fried dough.

Our Nigeria egg roll shares an identical resemblance with the shape and form of another snack “Scotch egg”.

There are a series of arguments about whether we, Nigerians, are mistaking scotch eggs as egg rolls. The truth in this situation is that we have something entirely different from what a scotch egg and Chinese egg rolls are.

The scotch egg is sausage meat rolled into bread crumbs and filled with boiled eggs while the other hand Chinese egg rolls are cylindrical and stuffed with pork, meat, and cabbage.

Recipe for making Nigerian egg rolls at home

Let me outline the recipe for you on how you can make egg rolls that are yummy while using basic ingredients in the comfort of your home.

First, let me give you the list of ingredients that you will need. The ingredients for this recipe include the following:

  • Eggs
  • Flour (4 cups)
  • Butter
  • Baking Powder
  • Sugar
  • Salt
  • Spices

Remember that the quantity of the ingredients depends on your preferences and how many people you intend to share with. I love to enjoy my egg rolls with my family.

The procedure begins with you boiling your eggs for 15-20 minutes. You need to ensure that the eggs are well-boiled, otherwise, they give the finished egg rolls a bad look and taste when eating them. Hence, this process should be treated as an essential part of the cooking process.

The next is where you need to sieve your flour to ensure you have fine particles of flour. Add a teaspoon of sugar and salt plus the spices. I prefer to use nutmeg in my case. You can use your preferred spices for yours.

Add butter to the mixture and ensure you mix it well till it is evenly mixed.

Take two fresh eggs, break them into a bowl and whisk it properly. Make a hole in the center of the flour mixture. Pour the whisked eggs into the center. Mix the mixture thoroughly.

Afterward, take the dough and knead and bear in mind that you do not need to over-knead. After kneading the dough, keep it for 10 minutes.

Get the dough and cut them into several smaller sizes you want. Take each size, and sprinkle a little flour to help with the flattening and rolling process. First, flatten out the dough and place a boiled egg before you roll them into the shape of a ball.

Make sure you do not have loose ends when you are rolling the dough into balls because it will affect the frying process. Repeat the process for each of the dough sizes you cut.

Finally, the frying part is next after the flattening and rolling process. Frying egg rolls need more groundnut oil and you should use that for your frying.

In addition, fry your egg rolls at medium heat for the best results. Allow the groundnut to heat up well enough before you start putting the balls of dough. You do not need to put too much at a time.

Frying the egg rolls for a few mins and ensuring that the egg rolls are not sticking to the pan. The egg rolls are ready when they are brown. Pick them out before they get over-fried.

Now is the time to enjoy your Nigeria Egg roll.
