The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, announced on September 7, are Apple’s new high-end flagship smartphones, available alongside the less expensive iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.
The iPhone 14 Pro models have many more features than the iPhone 14 models, including improved camera technology, better display capabilities, a faster A16 chip, and more.

The 6.1 and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro models have the same flat edges, stainless steel enclosure, textured matte glass back, IP68 water resistance, and Ceramic Shield-protected display as the iPhone 13 Pro models, but the camera bumps are larger to accommodate new lenses, and the display has also changed.
Dynamic Island
The True Depth camera system no longer has a notch, with Apple instead using what it calls the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped cutout at the front of the display that houses camera equipment and can change shape and size using software based on what’s on the screen.
According to Apple, Dynamic Island is intended to blur the line between hardware and software. It can adapt in real-time, displaying alerts, notifications, and activities in the space where the notch was.
There is still hardware underneath, but the True Depth camera takes up less space, and the Dynamic Island blends it into the background by better utilizing the screen.
Dynamic Island can display payment confirmations with Face ID, Maps directions, phone calls, music information, Live Activities such as sports scores, timers, and more, as well as interact with a tap-and-hold gesture.
Display
The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have a new Super Retina XDR display with updated ProMotion technology, allowing for an Always-On display for the first time on an iPhone.
The Always-On display is enabled by a new 1Hz to 120Hz refresh rate, as well as improved power-saving technologies. When the Always-On display is enabled, the time, widgets, and Live Activities are always visible at a glance, and the wallpaper is dimmed.
In addition to Always-On, the iPhone 14 Pro’s Super Retina XDR display has a higher peak HDR brightness of up to 2000 nits, putting it on par with the Pro Display XDR. It has the highest outdoor peak brightness of any smartphone and is twice as bright as the iPhone 13 Pro in direct sunlight.
Chip
The iPhone 14 Pro models have an updated A16 chip, marking the first time that Apple has used different chips for the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Pro. The A16 is the first chip built on the new 4-nanometer process, which improves speed and efficiency.
The A16 has a faster 6-core CPU, a faster 5-core GPU with 50% more memory bandwidth, and an updated 16-core Neural Engine that can perform 17 trillion operations per second.
Camera
Apple included a 48-megapixel Wide camera with a quad-pixel sensor that adapts to the photo being captured, compressing the detail of a 48-megapixel photo into a 12-megapixel photo.
For most photos, four pixels are combined into one large quad pixel to improve low-light performance even further. The 48-megapixel lens also has a 2x Telephoto mode, which uses the middle 12 megapixels to take full-resolution photos without digital zoom. This is in addition to the existing 3x zoom provided by the dedicated Telephoto lens, which has been improved.
The iPhone 14 Pro models can shoot in ProRAW at the full 48MP resolution, allowing the new iPhones to take impressive professional photos. A new 12-megapixel Ultra Wide camera with larger pixels for sharper images with more details and a better macro mode reduces shake and blur, and second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization reduces shake and blur.
For the first time, the TrueDepth front-facing camera has an improved f/1.9 aperture for better low-light selfies and videos, and it supports autofocus. The Adaptive True Tone flash has been redesigned with a nine-LED array that changes pattern depending on the focal length of the lens.
Night mode, Smart HDR 4, Portrait Mode, and Photographic Styles are still available.
The A16 chip in the iPhone 14 Pro models powers a Photonic Engine, which improves low-light performance across all lenses. With the Photonic Engine, the Telephoto, Wide, and front-facing TrueDepth cameras achieve 2x better low-light performance, while the Ultra Wide lens achieves 3x better low-light performance.
Deep Fusion is expanded by the Photonic Engine, which provides impressive detail while preserving subtle textures and improving color.
There is an Action Mode for the video that provides smoother-looking video with better image stabilization than ever before. Even when a video is captured in the middle of the action, Action Mode can adjust to significant shakes, motion, and vibrations.
Cinematic Mode has been improved and is now available in 4K at 30 frames per second and 4K at 24 frames per second.
Network
The iPhone 14 Pro models include 5G connectivity (sub-6GHz and mmWave in the US) and a new Qualcomm X65 modem. Because carriers now use eSIM, iPhone models in the United States ship without a physical SIM card.

Battery Life
The battery life on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max has been improved, lasting an hour longer than the iPhone 13 Pro models. When watching videos, the iPhone 14 Pro can last up to 23 hours, and the Pro Max can last up to 29 hours.
The storage capacities of the iPhone 14 Pro models are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Fast charging over Lightning is available with a 20W or higher charger, and MagSafe charging up to 15W is still supported. WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 are also supported by the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.
